Srinagar, May 26 : District Srinagar has been recognized as the top-performing district in Kashmir and the second-best across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir under the District Good Governance Index (DGGI) 4.0 for the year 2023–24, achieving a composite score of 6.5840.

Out of 20 districts assessed under DGGI 4.0, Srinagar secured the 1st rank in the Kashmir Division and ranked 2nd across J&K, demonstrating strong performance across critical sectors. Notably, the district clinched the top spot in Industries and Allied Sectors, 2nd in Public Infrastructure & Utilities, and 3rd in Environmental Management.

The recognition reflects the district administration’s emphasis on transparent governance, effective service delivery, and inclusive development.

Speaking on the achievement, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, described it as a proud moment for the district. He attributed the success to coordinated efforts across departments, praising officials for their dedication. “This milestone is a testament to our team’s consistent commitment to data-driven governance and on-ground execution,” he stated, urging departments to continue working with enhanced commitment to maintain and improve these rankings.

The District Good Governance Index 4.0 was officially released today by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who lauded the efforts of all Deputy Commissioners for their continued work in strengthening grassroots governance.

In a parallel economic milestone, the Chief Minister also unveiled, for the first time, District Domestic Product (DDP) estimates across J&K. Srinagar emerged as a major economic engine, contributing 14.53% to the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at current prices for 2022–23, despite accounting for only 10.08% of the Union Territory’s population.

Furthermore, Srinagar’s Per Capita Income (Net District Domestic Product) for 2022–23 (2nd revised estimates) stood at Rs 1,88,723, significantly above the UT average of Rs 1,30,492, reinforcing its role as the economic and administrative nucleus of Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]
