Srinagar, July 12 An earthquake of mild intensity, with epicentre in north Kashmir’s Baramulla, jolted Kashmir on Friday, officials said.
As per the National Center for Seismology- which monitors earthquake activity nationwide- the earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter Scale hit J&K at around 12.26PM with epicentre in Baramulla district of north Kashmir.
The epicentre is located at Latitude 34.42 and Longitude 74.34, with a recorded depth of 10 kilometres.
While there was no damage report, officials said panic spread to Baramulla and its adjoining areas where strong tremors were felt. Some videos surfaced on social media showing people coming out of homes and offices.
“According to the Met, the epicentre of the earthquake was in Baramulla district, and its intensity is reported to be 4.2. However, the earthquake we experienced here in Baramulla town felt far stronger, seeming to surpass even a magnitude of 7,” said a social media user, Mir Bilal from Baramulla.
A Baramulla resident said the jolt was strong and people were scared of going back to their houses for some time.
The tremors were felt in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir valley for a few seconds. (UNI)
