SIT Formed to Probe Attempted Firing at Farooq Abdullah in Jammu

Jammu, Mar 14: Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe an alleged attempt to open fire at Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, during a wedding function in Jammu.

According to an order issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Jammu, the incident occurred on March 11 when Abdullah was attending a marriage ceremony at Royal Park Banquet Hall in Greater Kailash area of Jammu.Officials said that at around 10:10 pm, when the National Conference president was leaving the venue, an individual allegedly flashed a revolver and attempted to fire from close range. However, the attempt was foiled due to the prompt action of the police personnel deployed for his security.

Police said a case has been registered at Police Station Gangyal under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.

Considering the seriousness and sensitivity of the matter, police authorities have constituted a Special Investigation Team under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, JSK Range, to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

The SIT includes Sanjay Sharma (SSP), Irshad Hussain Rather (SP Headquarters Jammu), Arvind Kumar Sambyal (DySP RPHQ Jammu), Inspector Saroop Singh, Inspector Paramjeet Singh, Inspector Sanjeev Chib (SHO Police Station Gangyal) and Inspector Shariq Majeed.

The order issued by Inspector General of Police Jammu Zone Bhim Sen Tuti directs the SIT to complete the investigation promptly and thoroughly in accordance with the statutory timeframe.

Police officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances and motive behind the attempted attack.
