Srinagar: International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12 to honour the dedication and selflessness of nurses worldwide in providing care and promoting good health. The day also coincides with the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing.

‘Our Nurses. Our Future’ the theme for this year’s Nurse’s Day as suggested by International Nurses Council, a global campaign which sets out what we want for nursing in the future in order to address the global health challenges and improve global health for all. The celebration of International Nurses Day started in 1965 by the International Council of Nurses (ICN).

This day is the birth anniversary of the famous Florence Nightingale. She was an English nurse, social reformer, and statistician. During the Crimean War, she gained fame while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses, being the pillar of modern nursing. She brought a reputation for nursing and became an icon in Victorian culture.

Nurses play an essential role in society today by being advocates for health promotion, educating the public and patients on preventing injury and illnesses, participating in rehabilitation, and providing care and support. Many regard Florence Nightingale as the modern nursing founder who rejected the societal expectations for middle-class women and pursued a nursing career. Her gritty determination and passion are characteristics that many midwives and nurses identify with today especially with the demands faced due to COVID-19 and other medical issues seen in communities.

Nurses are essential caretakers for a prosperous society. The celebration of International Nurses Day provides an opportunity to thank and appreciate the hard work of nurses, who often work long hours in challenging and stressful conditions to ensure the well-being of their patients.

A Senior Nurse Dilshada working at S.M.H.S told Asia Speaks that “we (Nurses) advocate for health promotion, patients and the public, we also educate patient families.
