{"id":2383,"date":"2024-05-20T18:06:24","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T18:06:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theasiaspeaks.com\/?p=2383"},"modified":"2024-05-20T18:10:21","modified_gmt":"2024-05-20T18:10:21","slug":"baramulla-records-pre-militancy-poll-fervour-voter-turnout-59","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theasiaspeaks.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/20\/baramulla-records-pre-militancy-poll-fervour-voter-turnout-59\/","title":{"rendered":"Baramulla records poll fervour, voter turnout 59%"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"230f1fddcf62ac2c0ab18f4eb7ad4e3e\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<amp-ad width=\"100vw\" height=\"320\"\r\n     type=\"adsense\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9616378591579964\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"4503876622\"\r\n     data-auto-format=\"rspv\"\r\n     data-full-width=\"\">\r\n  <div overflow=\"\"><\/div>\r\n<\/amp-ad>\n<\/div>\n<div class='booster-block booster-read-block'>\n                <div class=\"twp-read-time\">\n                \t<i class=\"booster-icon twp-clock\"><\/i> <span>Read Time:<\/span>3 Minute, 7 Second                <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n<p>Baramulla\/ Sopore\/ Kupwara, May 20 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency returned to pre-militancy poll fervour as the constituency on Monday saw a voter turnout of 59 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Electoral Officer Pandurang Kondbarao Pole said the people of Baramulla made history with the highest poll percentage ever recorded for the parliamentary seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While CEO Pole claimed it the highest poll percentage ever recorded for the parliamentary seat, the official data of Election Commission of India figures for 1984 Parliamentary polls shows the percentage at 61.09 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CEO said there were no untoward incidents reported anywhere, and zero violence was witnessed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The constituency is witnessing a high-stakes battle between National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah, former separatist turned mainstream leader, and People\u2019s Conference Chairman Sajad Lone and jailed leader Abdul Rashid Sheikh popularly known as Engineer Rashid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The voting in 18 segments of Baramulla constituency \u2013 comprising the border districts of Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara and two segments of central Kashmir\u2019s Budgam district started at 7 am with long queues of enthusiastic voters waiting to cast their votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The voter turnout in Baramulla Lok Sabha poll in 1996 when the first election was held following the beginning of the insurgency- was 46.7 percent. It was 38.9% in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, 39.1% in 2014, 41.8% in 2009, 35.5% in 2004, 27.8% in 1999, and 41.94% in 1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a significant increase in the turnout even in areas like Baramulla and Sopore towns, the erstwhile separatist bastions, where a good number of voters turned up today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI voted to ensure our identity is protected (referring to abrogation of Article 370 in 2019),\u201d said a voter, Tariq Ahmed, outside a polling station in Sopore town. \u201c In the past I never voted. And I believe the boycott disempowered us and I am voting to secure land and jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the five polling stations housed inside Sopore Government Degree College, out of 4222 votes, 1328 were polled by 4.30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sopore Assembly segment recorded a voter turnout of 40 percent votes till 5 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the neighbouring Baramulla town, known for poll boycotts in the past, Javaid Ahmed said he voted out of his own will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the last three decades, I have never voted for any party, but today I came out to vote on my own will,\u201d Ahmed , 48, said. The Baramulla Assembly segment recorded a voter turnout of 48 percent votes till 5 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, the Sopore assembly segment of Baramulla parliamentary constituency polled on 4.3 percent of votes while Baramulla assembly segment had polled 16 percent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Handwara, the native town of PC candidate Sajad Lone, the mood was upbeat. This town has traditionally in the past witnessed an impressive voter turnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe voted in 2002 polls and we were abused for this. But now after nearly two decades everyone is voting across Kashmir,\u201d said a woman voter Khalida, at a polling station in Handwara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In neighbouring Langate- the native town of Engineer Rashid, people had lined up to vote with the hope to see Rashid as a free man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Kupwara\u2019s Trehgam area- the birthplace of now banned Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, a traditional boycott village, people came out to vote in good numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mohammad Ashraf Mir, a retired principal, said a large number of people came out to vote in Trehgam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople here have now understood the power of vote,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the four polling stations at a Trehgam school, out of 3735 votes, 1023 were polled by around noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials said there was no untoward incident reported from any of the 2,103 polling stations. <\/p>\n        <div class=\"booster-block
