Srinagar, Sep 17 : A road accident in the Jogi Lanker area of Rainawari on Wednesday claimed the life of a 14-year-old schoolgirl and left five others injured. The incident occurred when an eco vehicle lost control and rammed into pedestrians, causing widespread panic in the densely populated area.

Police officials identified the vehicle involved in the accident as an eco van bearing registration number DLCAS 1744. The van was being driven by a local of Kalwal Mohalla, Rainawari, Srinagar.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a narrow lane, leading to the mishap.

The deceased was identified as a 14-year-old schoolgirl Madiha Farooq Bhat from Gurpora locality. She succumbed to her injuries shortly after being shifted to hospital.

Hospital sources confirmed that all five injured persons were all elderly persons, including four women. They identified the injured as Halima (55), a resident of Nowgam, Amina (57), a resident of Noor Bagh, Neelofar Fayaz (47) of Nehru Park, Gulshana ((45) of Rainawari and Bashir Ahmed Gagroo (65), a resident of Illahi Bagh Soura.
  Out of the five injured two were shifted to Bone and Joint Hospital while Gulshana with spinal injury was referred to SKIMS. Neelofar suffered a head injury and was taken to SMHS Hospital.
  Police have confirmed that the driver has been taken into custody, and a case vide FIR number 31/2025 has been registered. Authorities have assured a thorough probe into the accident. “The circumstances that led to the mishap are being investigated, and necessary legal action will follow,” a police officer said. [KNT]
