Srinagar , Oct 2   : Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, has petitioned the Jammu and Kashmir High Court to challenge what he describes as his ‘house arrest’, the separatist group announced on Wednesday.

The high court is slated to hear the petition on Friday. The Hurriyat claims their leader has been under house detention for a month, while the Jammu and Kashmir administration maintains that he is a free man, albeit under security surveillance for protection.

‘The High Court will hear the case of Mirwaiz’s house arrest/illegal detention on October 4. He has been under house detention for the past month,’ the Hurriyat stated. The group added that Mirwaiz previously filed a writ petition listed for November 2024. However, due to ongoing detention without formal orders, a new petition alongside an urgency memo was filed, citing violations of fundamental and religious rights.

The Hurriyat expressed confidence that the high court would uphold ‘natural justice and human rights enshrined in the Constitution.’ Farooq also called upon the legal fraternity, political organizations, and human rights groups to voice their concerns. ( KINS)
