Srinagar, May 16 (UNI) Senior BJP leader and Kashmir division in-charge Sunil Sharma on Thursday said that only mainstream politics would be tolerated in Jammu and Kashmir by the Narendra Modi government.

He was responding to a statement by a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) that they were ready to join electoral politics if the Centre lifts its ban on them.

“This is Modi Sarkar and only mainstream politics will be tolerated here. There is no right or left in J&K. Any organisation can take part in elections that believe in the sovereignty of India,” Sharma told reporters in Srinagar.

“But in case anyone challenges Indian sovereignty or is involved in unlawful activities, it won’t be tolerated,” he said, adding “organisations that operate within the Constitution of India will be allowed to work.”

On Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s Kashmir visit during the poll campaign, Sharma said it is aimed to further improve the poll percentage in the rest of the two seats of the valley.

“The way voters turnout on May 13 (Srinagar Lok Sabha polling day) was really impressive. The voter turnout showed the success of union government policies on J&K and Article 370 abrogation. To make this turnout more impressive and ensure an environment of peace, the Home Minister will review it from a security point of view,” he said.

Sharma said there is nothing political about the Home Minister’s visit. “He will be meeting party workers. As we don’t have our own candidates, workers will sit with him and discuss how to strengthen the party,” he said.

Sharma said no delegation will meet the home minister, who will arrive in Srinagar today.
